Strand was introduced to photography by the renowned social documentarian Lewis Hine, who instilled in him an understanding of the photograph as a powerful tool that should be used for the betterment of humanity. He visited New Mexico in 1926 and, beginning in 1930, returned for three consecutive summers, making portraits of artist friends and acquaintances. Paul Strand was an American artist who made significant contributions to the canon of 20th-century photography. Strand’s breadth of skill in the medium are exemplified both in his abstraction of architecture and shadows in Wall Street (1915) and his empathetic documentation of society in Blind (1916).
